After nearly 20 years in education and six years with OneSchool Global in the UK, Sara Haines was ready for a new challenge – one that would take her to the other side of the world.
Now Primary Lead Teacher at our Wellington campus in New Zealand, Sara says the move to the “land of the long white cloud” has been one of the best decisions of her career.
“When the opportunity came up, I couldn’t say no. It just felt like the right time – and it’s brought me so much peace and contentment knowing I made the right choice,” she says.
Her first glimpse of New Zealand left a lasting impression.
“Flying over the Cook Strait and seeing Wellington for the first time – it was incredible. I lived by the sea back in the UK, so being close to the water again just felt perfect.”
That sense of belonging continued from the moment she arrived on campus.
“It immediately felt like the OneSchool Global I knew, having worked at OSG in the UK. – like my school home. The welcome and support I received made the transition so much smoother.”
Sara says one of the biggest highlights of working at OneSchool Global New Zealand is the students.
“They are fantastic – so eager to learn and always striving to improve. It’s incredibly rewarding as a teacher.”
She values the strong partnerships between teachers, students and parents, which she believes are key to student success.
“When everyone works together, you can really support each child to grow and achieve their potential.”
Professionally, the move has given Sara the opportunity to keep growing, while continuing to inspire her students.
“I love my role as a teacher – helping students develop and succeed. OneSchool Global invests in its staff, giving you the support and opportunities to be your best.”
She has also noticed a strong culture of support across the organisation.
“The leadership team are approachable and genuinely care about staff. You feel valued and part of something bigger.”
Outside the classroom, Sara has embraced life in New Zealand, travelling across the country and joining a local dragon boat club.
“There are so many opportunities to explore – you’re always thinking about where to go next.”
For Sara, the most rewarding moments are often the simplest.
“It’s when a student has that ‘lightbulb’ moment and realises they’ve made progress – that’s what makes it all worthwhile.”
Her advice to teachers considering the move?
“Do it. You’re not going to be disappointed. The support, the opportunities, and the lifestyle are incredible.”
While the UK will always be home, Sara says New Zealand has quickly become a home away from home.
“I never imagined I’d end up here, but I’m so glad I did.”
