After teaching in Germany, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, and serving in senior leadership roles including Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal and Acting Principal, Babette has experienced a wide range of educational settings. Today, as Campus Principal at OneSchool Global Maungaturoto in New Zealand, she says she has found the place where she enjoys teaching the most.
Originally from Germany, Babette was drawn to OneSchool Global’s innovative approach to education and its commitment to putting students at the centre of learning.
“I’ve always been an early adopter and forward-thinking, and I really like the Learning to Learn framework and the approach to teaching and learning within OneSchool Global.”
At the heart of the school’s philosophy is the belief that students should take ownership of their learning. Through the Learning to Learn framework, students develop the skills to become self-directed learners, with agency over how they plan and manage their day.
One team, one approach
For Babette, one of the biggest advantages of working at OneSchool Global is being surrounded by colleagues who share the same commitment to this approach.
“It can be difficult in other schools to have everybody on the same track and thinking the same way,” she says. “Here, Learning to Learn is what we do.”
That shared vision creates a supportive environment where the focus remains firmly on helping students achieve their potential. Babette describes the campus as a place where teachers can concentrate on delivering great education, supported by positive relationships and a culture of continuous improvement.
She is equally passionate about the students, describing them as respectful, engaged and keen to learn. Strong relationships and open communication help create a positive environment where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their actions while continuing to grow and develop.
“The sense of integrity is second to none,” says Babette,
Finding balance in rural New Zealand
The Maungaturoto campus itself also has plenty to offer. Located in the beautiful Kaipara Harbour region, it combines a welcoming, close-knit school community with the lifestyle benefits of rural New Zealand. Rolling green hills, nearby beaches and easy access to Auckland provide the perfect balance between work and life outside the classroom.
For Babette, who moved to New Zealand with her family 15 years ago, that balance remains one of the country’s greatest strengths.
“It’s a really nice place where you can combine work with lifestyle and nature,” says Babette.
When asked what kind of teacher thrives at OneSchool Global, Babette’s answer is simple, “Educators who embrace innovation, enjoy working with technology and are motivated by helping students succeed will find their place at OSG.”.
Above all, she believes OneSchool Global offers something increasingly valuable in education today: the opportunity to rediscover the joy of teaching.
