OSG’s values of care and compassion shaped the multi-campus effort to support veterans through the Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP). Led by Our Des Moines campus and joined by Ashland, Portland and Seattle, students engaged in an impactful learning and giving journey.
To kick-off the WWP outreach, OneSchool was honoured to host WWP’s spokesperson, Juan Valdez, over Zoom, who shared a touching testimonial about the positive impact the WWP has had on his life. He shared that we can all be members of a QRF (Quick Response Force) for those around us and emphasized the importance of coming together to help others. Funds raised directly honor the courage and support of those who have served, when they return home. Spreading awareness of their service and sacrifices lasts a lifetime.
The four campuses set a collective US$5,000 fundraising goal to support the injured veterans. Students learned about the history, sacrifices and realities of service members through Honor Their Courage, a service-learning opportunity benefiting Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP). Some activity highlights included an at will donation luncheon and writing thank you letters to veterans.
On June 3, 2026, the Des Moines campus was honoured once again by a special WWP presenter, and mother of a wounded warrior, Cindy Parsons. Allison, a OneSchool teacher shared, “Ms. Parson’s speech emphasized that even the smallest actions can make a meaningful difference in the world. She encouraged us to look out for one another, reminding us that simple acts of care and compassion can have a lasting impact.”
Students presented a check for US$8,825.37, representing the multi-campus funds raised through WWP’s Honor Their Courage program. Though this amount exceeded their funding goal, what really surpassed their expectations was the impact this outreach experience had on them. Brockton, a student at OSG expressed, “’Because it matters.’ Ms. Parsons said this quote many times throughout her speech and it is something that I will remember for years to come.”
The Wounded Warrior Project® is another excellent example of organizations that provide opportunities for everyday people to help others. As veteran Juan Valdez shared, “We can all be members of a Quick Response Force for those around us.” Let’s continue to encourage one another to come together to help others.
