Zain reigniting his passion for teaching at OneSchool Global
After more than two decades in the public education system, Zain Thompson knew he needed a change. What he didn’t expect was how deeply rewarding that change would be.
Now teaching Year 7 and 8 students at OneSchool Global’s Auckland campus, Zain reflects on his transition with enthusiasm and gratitude.
“I’d been teaching for around 22 years, and I just needed something different. When I came across the OneSchool Global advertisement, it really stood out – it talked about discovering the joy of teaching. That was exactly what I was looking for.”
A shift that delivered
Almost a year into his role, Zain says the experience has more than lived up to expectations.
“I’m teaching smaller class sizes, and the students are motivated to learn. They take ownership of their learning and they are self-directed. That’s a big shift from what I was used to.”
It’s been this change that has allowed Zain to focus on what matters most – student learning.
“I have more time to sit down with students and really understand where they’re at. We have deep, meaningful conversations that help guide their progress. It’s incredibly rewarding.”
A supportive environment
Zain also underscores the strong sense of support and community among staff.
“We’re well looked after here. There’s a real sense of care and collaboration. It’s been like a dream.”
That support has helped Zain rediscover his passion for teaching.
“After so many years, you can start to feel a bit stale. But this role has reignited my love for teaching. I’m enjoying every single day.”
Growth through new challenges
Beyond the classroom, Zain appreciates the opportunities for professional growth.
