Future-ready skills: How OneSchool Global aligns with NFER’s Skills Imperative 2035

The National Foundation for Education Research (NFER Skills Imperative 2035) is a five-year research program funded by the Nuffield Foundation, aimed at understanding how the UK labour market will change by 2035 and what skills will be most essential for future employment.
Launched in late 2025, the report highlights Essential Employment Skills (EES); six core skills that will become increasingly critical across all sectors:
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Creative thinking
- Information literacy
- Organising, planning, and prioritising
- Problem solving and decision making.
We are delighted to see that EES overlap with our established OneSchool Global Primary Skills which consist of five key areas of: Planner, Communicator, Collaborator, Creator and Reflector.
The Skills Imperative concluded that by 2035, 22% of workers (around 7 million people) may lack these essential skills, creating significant risks for employability and productivity. The report also stresses the need for a lifelong learning system involving government, employers, and education providers to ensure individuals develop these skills from early childhood through adulthood.
