After more than three decades in education, UK teacher Chris Greenwood wasn’t planning to start over – but moving to New Zealand and joining OneSchool Global (OSG) brought fresh energy and purpose to her career.
Now in her seventh year with OSG New Zealand as a secondary school teacher, Chris says the move has been incredibly rewarding.
“We’re outdoor people, which is the reason that we came (to New Zealand). It’s an amazing country – there’s so much variety and so much to do.”
Originally from the UK, Chris taught near the Lake District for 16 years before relocating, and the lifestyle change has been significant.
“It’s a completely different lifestyle. It’s much more relaxed and if you’ve got a young family, it’s an amazing place to bring your kids up.”
OSG’s student self-ownership model for learning stood out immediately to Chris.
“I think OneSchool’s approach is quite unique. It’s really at the cutting edge of educational theory and delivery.”
This model also gives teachers more time to focus on how they teach.
“Our assignments are already well developed and moderated to a high standard, so I don’t have to spend as much time planning. I can focus on how I deliver learning.”
Even after 30 years in the classroom, Chris says the role as a teacher continues to challenge her.
“It’s not the same old, same old every day. It is a challenging job, but it’s a very rewarding job.”
She also values the strong team culture.
“There’s a high level of accountability but being part of a team means you learn from others and perform at a higher level.”
Support from colleagues has also been key – especially when adapting to new ways of teaching.
“I’d never taught over Zoom before, so that was a steep learning curve. But there are always experienced people around you – you’re never on your own.”
Chris also highlights the strong sense of school community.
“Parents are incredibly supportive and involved. It creates a great environment for both students and teachers.”
For UK teachers considering the move, her advice is simple:
“Just go for it. It’s been great professionally to have a change – but personally, even more rewarding seeing my kids grow up in this environment.”
Chris’s journey shows that with the right support, moving to New Zealand can offer both a lifestyle upgrade and a renewed passion for teaching – something many educators are now seeking.
