After years working across a wide range of education settings in the UK, Catt Holmes was ready for a change – but she didn’t expect that move to take her all the way to New Zealand.
Now teaching commerce at OneSchool Global Kerikeri campus, Catt says the decision to make the move has been one of the most rewarding of her career.
“I had thought about moving to New Zealand on and off for about 20 years, but it was never the right time,” she says. “Then I realised you can always find reasons not to do something – and I decided it was time for a change.”
After discovering OneSchool Global while researching opportunities abroad, Catt was drawn to its innovative approach to learning – but admits she wasn’t completely sure what to expect.
“I thought it sounded really interesting and refreshing, but I wanted to experience it for myself,” she says. “As soon as I arrived and met the team, I knew I’d made the right decision. Every day since then, I’ve felt the same.”
Catt says one of the biggest highlights of working at OneSchool Global New Zealand is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students.
“I see the same students every day, and I’m able to really get to know them. That means I can see the impact I’m having – even in small ways – and that’s incredibly rewarding.”
She also enjoys the balance between face-to-face and online teaching delivered through OneSchool Global’s innovative learning model.
“I was worried I might lose that connection with students, but it’s the opposite. The mix of on-campus learning and one-to-one tutorials means I’ve built stronger relationships than I expected.”
The move hasn’t just offered professional benefits – it’s also delivered the lifestyle change she had been seeking.
“It’s a more relaxed, outdoorsy way of life. I feel really at home here – it’s familiar enough to be comfortable, but different enough to feel like an adventure.”
Catt also highlights the strong support she received throughout her move.
“From the P&C team to colleagues on campus, everyone was so helpful. I’d already made connections before I arrived, and that made such a difference. The support – even financially with relocation – really helped ease the transition.”
While leaving family behind in the UK was a challenge, she says the experience has been worth it.
“Once I got here, I knew I’d made the right decision.”
For Catt, OneSchool Global has not only provided a new way of teaching, but a renewed sense of purpose.
“The thing that brings me the most joy is knowing I can make a real difference. Seeing the progress students make and the confidence they build – that’s what it’s all about.”
Her advice for teachers considering making the move?
“Keep an open mind and go for it. It’s been so much better than I expected – I’m really glad I came.”
For UK educators looking for a fresh start, a supportive environment and a lifestyle change, Catt’s experience shows that OneSchool Global New Zealand offers both professional fulfilment and a place to truly feel at home.
