Leading with compassion: Detroit campus students make a difference

What happens when students lead with care, compassion and a desire to serve? At OneSchool Global’s Detroit Campus, the Student Leadership Team (SLT) set out to make a meaningful impact – and they did just that.

Determined to support those with the greatest need in their community, the SLT turned to a trusted source for insight: their local police department. Community Relations Officer, Heather Glowacz of the Bloomfield Police Department, was moved by the initiative.

“I thought it was awesome when a student reached out to me—it wasn’t a principal or a teacher, it was them. That’s the whole reason I got into police work: to serve the community,.” said Officer Glowacz.

With guidance from Officer Glowacz, the students connected with Haven, a local organisation providing critical services to individuals and families in crisis. Inspired by Haven’s mission, the SLT launched a campus-wide donation drive to collect the most-needed items.

To spark excitement and engagement, they organised a friendly competition between three campus teams. The response? Incredible. Students from grades 3 through 12 (51 in total), rallied together, collecting a generous supply of much needed donations. It was a purpose-driven passion project indeed!

“I’m very proud of everything they’ve done,” said Detroit Campus Principal Andrew Kralik. “Proud of who they are becoming, proud of their leadership and responsibility, but almost more importantly, proud of their care and compassion. Especially in today’s world, we need that more than ever.”

OneSchool Global is committed to developing students who learn how to learn and achieve. This student-led outreach is a successful lesson in how to positively impact others through community engagement, one we can all learn from.
