Russell Cannings’ journey to teaching is anything but traditional. After building a career in biology, he followed a long-held passion for education, earning his teaching degree in Canada before making the move to New Zealand. Today, as a History and Social Science Teacher at OneSchool Global’s Hamilton campus, he brings a unique perspective to the classroom and a genuine enthusiasm for helping students discover the value of learning.
Having taught at OneSchool Global for the past decade, Russell says the school’s approach stood out from the beginning.
“I was applying everywhere, and OneSchool Global was actually the first opportunity where I could really see myself.”
For Russell, one of the most powerful aspects of the OSG experience is the Learning to Learn Framework. He believes it equips students with skills that extend far beyond their school years, encouraging them to develop independence, curiosity and a lifelong appreciation for learning.
“Students learn to motivate themselves,” he explains. “They’re learning because they want to do it, because they find it interesting and can see the long-term value.”
This focus on self-directed learning helps students build confidence, resilience and a mindset that supports success well into the future.
Beyond the classroom, Russell has found a strong sense of connection within the OSG school community. He values the relationships he has built not only with students, but also with parents, siblings and the wider community that supports school events and activities.
“There’s this support from the community. They’re very appreciative of what you do.”
Those connections contribute to a welcoming environment where teachers and students alike feel valued and supported.
Russell also highlights the positive culture among staff. Having experienced both traditional and innovative educational settings, he appreciates the understanding and encouragement shared by colleagues who have made similar transitions.
“Everyone understands what it’s like to move from a more traditional school to this space,” he says. “It’s a place where teachers might find they’ve got a bit more room to breathe and be themselves.”
For educators considering a career with OneSchool Global, Russell believes the school offers something special: an opportunity to bring diverse experiences into education, inspire a love of learning, and be part of a collaborative community where both students and teachers can thrive.
His story is a reminder that great teachers come from many different backgrounds, and that a passion for learning can open doors to rewarding and meaningful opportunities.
