From Bagpipes to Boomerangs – Julie’s leadership journey

Julie is one of those rare individuals whose genuine passion for people drives everything she does. It’s that passion that has driven her to move continents, build a successful career in education, and most importantly, become a role model and mentor to those forging their own path

The first Spark

Reflecting on her path to teaching, Julie admits, “Teaching wasn’t initially my plan. But once I stepped into that classroom in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, something just clicked. It sparked a fire in me that hasn’t burned out since.” That spark began a career that would take her across continents and into leadership roles she never imagined for herself.

A Move to Australia: Finding New Opportunities

In 2011, Julie and her family relocated to Perth, Australia, following a job opportunity for her husband.  Six months after landing in Australia, Julie got a role at an OSG Western Australia campus. From there, she grew, first from part-time teaching to Head of Student Support, and eventually to the role she holds today—Regional Director of Teaching and Learning Primary.

Leading with Humility and Authenticity

When it comes to leadership style Julie says,

I’ve always believed that leadership is about being real, I’m not afraid to admit when I don’t have all the answers. What matters is that I’m there for my team, that I’m transparent and supportive.”

“Part of that has been driven by my own moments of tacking imposter syndrome.”

“In those early days, I’d find myself questioning whether I belonged in those leadership rooms. But I’ve learned to trust myself, to trust that someone saw potential in me—and I had to start seeing it too.”

Now, she’s focused on lifting others up, using her experiences to guide them through the challenges she once faced.

Mentoring the Next Generation of Women Leaders

Mentorship is where Julie’s true passion shines.

“Right now, I’m mentoring four incredible women who are new to leadership roles,” she says proudly. “There’s nothing more fulfilling than seeing them grow, knowing I played a small part in that. It’s so important to create pathways for the next generation of leaders.”

This International Women’s Week, Julie’s story is a reminder of what it means to embrace challenges, believe in one’s potential, and, above all, empower others to succeed. Julie’s journey isn’t just about where she’s been; it’s about how she continues to uplift everyone around her, creating lasting change wherever she goes.
