Celebrating Global Primary Reading Week: Inspiring a Love of Reading!

During March, we proudly celebrated Global Primary Reading Week, a global initiative aimed at inspiring our primary school students to read for at least 10 minutes every day. Rachel Beyer, OSG’s Global Director of Teaching and Learning Primary shared:

It was amazing to see our students embrace the challenge of reading just 10 minutes a day. In fact, we reached an incredible 398,959.2 minutes of reading logged worldwide!”

What made this week so special, was the students’ ability to choose their own books. Rachel added “Allowing the students to select the books they were most interested in was such a key part of this initiative. It wasn’t about being assigned something to read it was about letting them discover what excited them. From thrilling adventures to insightful stories, students had the freedom to select books that resonated with them, making the reading experience more engaging and enjoyable.”

The energy on our campuses was contagious, and seeing the students dive into their books was inspiring. “It was so rewarding to witness the enthusiasm and excitement across our campuses. I was especially proud to see our Gnowangerup and Albany (Western Australia) and Toowoomba (Queensland) campuses leading the way with the highest average reading times. Their efforts set a great example for everyone. Every student who participated should be incredibly proud. No matter how much time they spent reading, it was the effort that counted, and that’s what made it so special.”

Rachel also took a moment to recognise the dedication of the teaching staff “Our teachers support, and encouragement was essential in making Global Primary Reading Week a success. They played such a crucial role in motivating the students and ensuring the event was both fun and educational.”

Reflecting on the week, Rachel shared her thoughts on the bigger picture:

“This initiative wasn’t just about hitting a target. It was about helping students develop a love for reading –about fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong passion for books. That’s something I hope our students will take through their education and into life.”

Looking ahead, Rachel is already excited for future reading challenges. Having seen how powerful reading can be in opening new worlds and expanding imaginations, she can’t wait to see where the students’ reading journeys take them next!
