As a firefighter, every day brings new challenges, and Captain Andrew Ruiz has spent nearly 32 years preparing for and facing them. With 27 of those years serving with the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), Capt. Ruiz has seen it all—until the devastating Palisades fires in January 2024. Recently, Capt. Ruiz joined OSG North America’s live Morning Announcements to share his firsthand experience, the values he holds and the lessons we can all take.
The Palisades Fires: A Test of Strength and Resolve
On January 7th, 2024, Capt. Ruiz was notified of a fire in the Pacific Palisades area of Los Angeles County. What began as a single fire would quickly escalate into one of the most devastating blazes in recent memory. By January 31st, the fire had consumed over 24,000 acres, destroyed nearly 6,800 homes, and required more than 5,500 firefighters to tackle the blaze. Despite the tireless efforts of over 540 engines and other supportive apparatus, the fire continued to spread, fueled by winds that reached 80-100 mph.
Capt. Ruiz described the intense conditions, with wind gusts so powerful that they redirected the water from fire hoses, making it even harder to contain the fire. He compared the devastation to the aftermath of 9/11 in New York City, calling it “one of the most overwhelming sights I’ve ever seen”. The sheer scale and unpredictability of the Palisades fire tested every firefighter involved.
What It Takes to Be a Firefighter
Being a firefighter requires more than just physical strength—it requires a deep commitment to service and teamwork. Capt. Ruiz shared that his passion for firefighting stemmed from his love of team sports.
“The fire service challenges me physically, and more importantly, it allows me to work as part of a team—where success is achieved together, not as individuals, ” says Ruiz.
“Firefighters are held to a higher standard, both on and off duty, and must always demonstrate professionalism, service, and integrity. These values are essential for working in an environment where lives are on the line.”
When asked how the LAFD managed such a large-scale effort, Capt. Ruiz admitted, “It starts as absolute chaos.” However, through effective communication and mutual trust, firefighters rely on their training and each other to get the job done. “Everyone wearing the uniform is competent, will do their best job, and will work as a team.”
Life Lessons from the Fire Service
Integrity is central to firefighting, and Capt. Ruiz encouraged students to apply this mindset to their academic lives:
“Stay committed, even when it’s tough. Don’t take shortcuts—stick with it, and the satisfaction of doing it yourself is worth it.”
Ruiz’s father once shared this advice with him: “It’s your attitude, not your aptitude, that will determine your altitude in life.” Capt. Ruiz believes that a positive attitude is essential for overcoming challenges and achieving success, both in firefighting and in everyday life.
Overcoming Challenges: A Shared Experience
In both firefighting and school, challenges are inevitable. Capt. Ruiz reminded students that whether you’re battling a fire or studying for an exam, persistence is key.
“You’re going to face tough times—maybe it’s a class you’re struggling with, or a test you can’t seem to pass,” he said. “But just like in firefighting, as long as you give it everything you’ve got, that’s what matters. The effort itself will get you through.”
His advice to students: “Don’t give up. Stay with it. Overcoming those challenges will prepare you for anything life throws your way.”
Values aligned
At OneSchool Global, we believe in the power of values such as integrity, care, compassion, respect, responsibility and commitment—values that are also integral to the work done by firefighters like Capt. Ruiz. In fact, some of our own students volunteered to serve hot meals and distribute snacks to hundreds of service men and women battling the Palisades fires.
Capt. Ruiz was deeply appreciative, stating, “This incident required everyone’s effort, and for those of you who were able to assist—thank you for being a part of our team. Your dedication and commitment made a difference, and we truly appreciate your support.”
The story of the heroic work of those who fought the Palisades fires is a reminder that when we work together—whether in firefighting or in school—we can make a lasting impact. Just as Capt. Ruiz and his team came together to battle one of the most devastating fires in California’s history, we, too, can face life’s challenges by working together and supporting each other.
In the end, it’s not just about the fires we fight—it’s about the lessons we learn, the teamwork we build, and the values we uphold along the way. Whether you’re a firefighter, a student, or anyone facing adversity, remember: your effort and attitude will carry you through.
